The Epiphany or the Manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles

saintbarnabasanglicanofseattle.org

What happens after the 12 days of Christmas tide? Yesterday we concluded the 12 days, while today we celebrate a new season. The Christian church year, which begins with Advent, the season leading up to Christmas, tells the story of Jesus' life and saving acts. Christmas of course celebrates his birth at Bethlehem. The next season, following the twelve days of Christmas, is marked by the festival of Epiphany, which is today January 6th. [ 210 more words ]

It’s Almost Christmas!

saintbarnabasanglicanofseattle.org

Starting on December 24 (Saturday) at 5:00 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. we celebrate the birth of Jesus. We also have a service on December 25 (Sunday) at 10:00 a.m. (A wee bit earlier than usual). Christmas is not (just) for children, and it's not (just) about good cheer and gifts. The festival celebrates the fact that God, the Holy and Almighty God that created the universe, chose to become man (that's right, Jesus was both man and God) in order to save us from the consequences of our sins. Advent – it’s not Christmas yet…

saintbarnabasanglicanofseattle.org

While some are immersed in the annual Santa Festival (more lights! more food! more retail purchases!), St. Barnabas is celebrating the season of Advent. Advent (from the Latin for "coming" or "arrival") is a season of expectation, looking to the ancient prophecies that God would visit and save his people. The prophecies addressed a situation with which we all can relate: the world was made by a holy God, but everyone has failed in many ways to be holy. [ 150 more words ]
